Navigating Uncertainty
This piece is an editorial cover for an educational article about Mild Cognitive Impairment. MCI is a condition that causes memory loss or trouble with language and judgement. It's considered a midpoint between regular brain function and dementia. MCI symptoms may never improve once they develop and suddenly noticing you're significantly more forgetful or absent-minded can be jarring.
Since there's no guarantee things can get better for MCI patients, they might lose direction in their lives. I wanted to emphasize this lack of direction in this piece. Lighthouses are often symbols of direction, so I took these motifs and turned them on their head. Multiple lighthouses, with multiple bouncing beams of light from each, symbolize complete confusion. The fog is also representative of the "brain fog" patients may feel is present when they can't recall things they used to.
My ideation stages for this piece were revised multiple times to make sure the concept was solid. I explored more unique color options before settling into more local colors instead.
