Locked Away

This piece was created to be a cover to an Atlanta Journal Constitution article: Georgia Prison System Engages in Deception as Crisis Builds. In summary, the amount of prisoner deaths in Georgia prisons has recently increased. Around the same time, Georgia prisons stopped releasing information about how or why these prisoners were dying. Usually, they would give cause of death. Now, even with court orders demanding them to release it, they refuse.

I emphasized the concept at the core of this issue- information locked behind closed doors. The prisons do have this information, but it is literally locked away. I found that Correctionsproductsco produces key and lock pairs for the United States prison system, and I used their designs directly to tie this concept back to the issue in the article. To top it off- Tyrone Oliver, the Georgia prison commissioner, is holding the keys. He has the ability to open the lock and release the necessary information about the prisoner deaths.

I changed the color palette to greater emphasize the glow around the lock and key, and to reflect the dreary colors you'd normally see inside state prisons. I explored two other articles and concepts in my thumbnails, but settled with this one because the message was the most clear.
